Press Release 12/2016

Neustadt-Fernthal, April 2016

BOY open house with 3D prospects for injection moulders

The visitors at the 3D open house at BOY spent a very informative and eventful day. The manufacturer of injection moulding machines with clamping forces up to 1,000 kN invited its customers and prospective customers to this event to Neustadt-Fernthal. Around 250 visitors from all over Germany accepted the invitation and were informed in detail about the trend topic “3D in symbiosis with modern injection moulding technology“.

The BOY Managing Partner Alfred Schiffer opened the event and explained the advantages of 3D technology. In contrast to the additive part production, BOY relies on the production of mould inserts for injection moulding moulds using commercial 3D printers. BOY has with Stratasys a competent partner, who is leading in 3D technology.

The mould inserts, which are produced quickly and cost-effectively with Stratasys printers, are installed into the mould and the production of injection moulded plastic parts can start. Thus, prototypes and components in small batches can be produced considerably more efficient. The chemical and physical part properties correspond exactly to those of a mass produced part in a conventional mould“ says Alfred Schiffer.
With this implementation of the 3D technology, a multitude of materials can be processed, which are not applicable with an additive part production.

After a factory tour, during which the modern BOY injection moulding machines with interesting applications were not neglected, the visitors got a detailed understanding of 3D printing in theory and practice. In particular, the practical experiences and tricks that BOY acquired since Fakuma 2015 were the focus of the visitor´s interest. Many users had application-technical questions concerning the moulding process, the temperatures and pressures as well as design and service life of the 3D mould inserts. Michael Kleinebrahm, BOY Manager Process Engineering, imparted a multitude of valuable tips and findings for the interested visitors in his practical lecture.

For those who could not participate in the 3D open house, BOY is pleased to offer further presentations and mould tests in its pilot plant (not only) concerning 3D printing. A precise 3D printer with high resolution as well as a multitude of BOY machine types are available.

BOY was energetically supported at the 3D open house by its partner companies Stratasys, encee Systems (Stratasys Gold Partner), EMDE Industrietechnik as well as EMT Dorsiertechhnik and Hasco.
